Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA)

Regional Advisor

As a Business & Information Technology instructor, not only have I enjoyed the honor of serving as an FBLA advisor for our local chapter, I have been honored to serve twice as a regional advisor (2006-07 and 2009-10) by sponsoring Hopewell High School graduates Kelsey Diradour '07 and Kayla Webb '10 during their terms as FBLA State Vice President - Virginia State University Region.

As regional advisor, I led business department teachers, students, and other VSU Region advisors in planning and executing the Fall Conference (Fall 2006 and Fall 2009) at Hopewell High School. Below are pictures from Fall Conference 2006, in addition to pictures from the State Officer Training (Summer 2009) at Roanoke College, where I served as Kayla Webb's advisor and chaperone, received instruction on regional advisor duties, and worked collaboratively with other state officers and regional advisors to develop lesson plans.

Local Chapter Advisor

With the student leadership of Hopewell High School graduate Alfredo Alvarado '08, FBLA and the Beta Club sponsored the the school's first dodge ball tournament in May 2008.  The event was held again in May 2009.  The two events generated about $4,000, which was donated to charity and to student scholarships.

During a Virginia Business Education Association conference, I attended a session by Non-Traditional Media.  During the session, I learned their format and best practices for fundraising through dodge ball tournaments. This is the format we used to successfully collaborate for both tournaments.  The video below is footage from the first tournament.  It was used to advertise for the seconed tournament.
